Which PS3 console is better The fat original one or the slim one?
Well, that all depends on what you want to use it for.
The original 'Phat' PS3 comes in a few different configurations. There was 20, 40, 60, 80,& 120gb models of this unit. Features varied from 4 usb to 2 usb, Emotion chips (which emulate PS2 games) & Flash/MMC readers. The way to tell which have the emotion chips is easy; they are the ones with 4 usb ports. All 'Phat' units have the ability to play PSone games however. All came with option to 'OtherOS'** an option to install another operating system alongside the PS3 system. These 'Phat' models have been increasingly more susceptible to the dreaded YLOD (yellow light of death), a major hardware malfunction most likely cause by overheating.
The new 'Slim' PS3 comes in 2 sizes 120 & 250gb. They are able to play PSone games, but lack the emotion chip required to emulate PS2 titles. With the new 'slimmer & quieter' design also came new brandings on the console & game boxes. All models have only 2 usb ports, no Flash/MMC readers & no 'OtherOS'** option. Most models are 'Netflix Stream Ready' which allows users to stream netflix on the PS3 with a special disk.
**OtherOS has since been removed from all PS3s with the release of firmware 3.20 with Sony citing reasons of 'security' at the root. Sony made 'Phat' users decide to keep the feature at the cost of losing all PlaystationNetwork access; basically crippling all online games, trophies & DLC. They have since received a class-action lawsuit for the intentional removal of an advertised feature of a product.
I own both units. I have a 'Slim' 250gb model & 'Phat' 80gb MGS4 bundle. The phattie is good for playing my entire library of Playstation titles (PSone, PS2 & PS3) but lacks the space (for me) to be my primary media center. The slims solves the media issue at the cost of that PS2 functionality.
