What's to stop Nintendo from making an update that disables the new R4 cards made for the DSi?
New R4 cards have been made to bypass the DSi's security blockage. If the Free-Loader for Wii is any indication, this isn't going to last long unless I refuse any updates which might be required to play newer DSi games or continue to play online.
Nintendo will never stop piracy. However I believe that many people massively overestimate the amount of DS piracy that goes on. I've read nonsense stories stating that "up to 90 percent of Nintendo DS owners in the U.S. play pirated games". This figure is clearly laughable. I would bet that 90% of DS owners aren't even aware what an R4 chip is, let alone capable of using one. Most consumers struggle to install and configure basic software.
I am not familiar with exactly how the R4 has been implemented but if it is possible for Nintendo to bundle an update with newer games, they may choose not to. Although it would prevent R4 users from playing copied games, Nintendo will also have to deal with the return and repair of DS consoles which are rendered useless due to a failed update.
