Disk Read Error Press ctrl alt del to restart?
I get this error right after the post. system 1, I Cannot boot to the xp CD becuase it hangs after "press any key to boot from CD" probably at "checking hardware configuration" but all i get is a black screen and the hdd running. first thought ata cable, changed both. no change.
Heres the agravating part. tried the HDD on another system (2) as master, wont boot, but at least i could get into the recovery console. did chkdsk found errors, did chkdsk /r and fixboot and fixmbr. returned hdd to original system, no change.
changed hdd out on system 1 for blank hdd. for that hdd i can get into the recoveryconsole. that tells me that its not a system board problem, but doesn't help me with the original Hdd.
I can boot to a win 98 ebd, but i hate to fdisk my harddrive, I have been lazy about back up 
Any IDEAS????
You can put a blank good hard drive in system 1 as a primary master, put the bad hard drive in as primary slave in system 1.
Then, install windows on the good hard drive and see if you can get to the files on the second. You can try a program like Restorer 2000 pro to recover the files.
When a hard drive goes bad, the chances are slim you'll get the data off, but it's worth a try.
Myself, I've had times its worked, and not worked. It depends on if the drive wants to cooperate.
